Everyone has their own writing style, and it’s perfectly fine if you’re still trying to figure out yours. There are guidelines to follow when writing for certain audiences or writing certain pieces, but you can still make them unique and write them in your own way.
That being said, there is always the opportunity to improve your writing style, and here are a few tips on how to do this when writing from home.
What is my writing style?
Your writing style is like your voice, and it is how you use words to convey what it is you’re trying to express. The key is knowing how and when to change your style to suit different situations.
Be concise
One of the main things to remember when writing is to be direct or concise. Read over your sentences and get rid of any redundant words, or think how something can be reworded to appear clearer.
Be familiar
Unless you’re writing something really technical or scientific, you don’t have to go looking through your thesaurus to find the best words to describe something. More often than not, using familiar language will get your message across better.
Keep it short
If you write long sentences or paragraphs, you might find your readers losing interest. It’s also easier visually for someone to process a shorter passage.
Always re-read and edit
One of the most common mistakes is to write something and not spend enough time editing your work. Reading your work through several times will help you spot any mistakes and give you a better idea of how your work sounds.
