Writing is a big part of everyday life, whether it’s writing emails, blog posts or social media comments. It can be intimidating if you struggle, or need to Google the spelling of a word every so often, but there are lots of ways to improve, and anyone can do it.
Here are five tips to always bear in mind:
1. Get to grips with the basics
First things first when it comes to writing – you will need to have a basic understanding of it before you start whatever it is you’re going to write. Different pieces of writing require different structures. You couldn’t write a formal letter the way you’d write an informal blog post, for example.
2. Read a lot
What helps a lot of people, especially with spelling, is reading. This can be anything from magazines to novels – the more exposure you have to words and sentence structures, the better your writing is likely to become.
3. Practise – a lot!
As with anything, practice makes perfect, and writing is no different. Scribble things down in a notebook or keep your phone or laptop handy to write whatever comes to mind. The more you do it, the easier it will become.
4. Find an honest writing partner
Once you’ve written a few things, get someone to take a look at one of your pieces for you. It’s best if they can give you some honest criticism, and potentially some tips if they are also a writer.
5. Join a class
If you are really committed, you may want to join a class or a workshop. There, you will be surrounded by like-minded people and may get a few extra tips from peers while you’re taking part.
